Born in artistic Eltham, Julian Bruere studied Graphic Design at RMIT, embarking on numerous artistic and illustrative jobs as a book illustrator, advertising artist, animation background artist and real-estate artist until becoming dedicated to teaching watercolour and working as a professional watercolour painter. He has travelled and painted in Europe (2011), New Zealand (2014), China 2016 and England (2017).
Bruere is a regular exhibitor in Melbourne and has been involved in International Watercolour Exhibitions in China and Taiwan. For 15 years he was involved with FIVE, an annual group exhibition of select artists from the Victorian Artists Society. As the President of the Australian Society of Marine Artists he organises the ASMA National Exhibitions in Melbourne. Among his many Watercolour Awards are Victorian Art Society Artist of the Year (2010, 2013, 2018, 2022); Best Traditional Work Mission to Seafarers ANL Maritime Awards 2009 and 2016, the Kenneth Jack Memorial Award (2010, 2014), the AGRA (Australian Guild of Realist Artists) Medallion (2013, 2015), Bruere is the President of the Australian Society of Maritime Artists and a past Treasurer of the Victorian Artists’ Society. The Australian Watercolour Institute elected Julian Bruere as a member in 2015 and in 2023 was a founding member of the Brandon Circle.
