During November 1-4, 2022, 10 artists from the Australian Society of Marine Artists spent 3 days sailing aboard the Lady Nelson ship out of Hobart as a reference gathering mission in the lead up to the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart, February 2023.
The residency was sponsored by TAS Ports and the Lady Nelson is crewed by volunteers, skippered by Mal Riley. Weather conditions ranged from 100km/hr wind gusts & hail to beautiful sunshine and near pristine sailing conditions.
Temperatures ranged from 4 degrees Celsius overnight to 14 degrees during the day with an Antarctic wind chill that brought the experiential temp below zero. The artists ranged in sailing experience from Merchant Mariner to ‘never sailed at all’ but the overall experience was a hugely positive one!
