Suzy King is inspired by the sea and industrial waterfront, a decayed crumbling structure, a close up of a power pole with its tangle of complex wires, or an interesting old architectural detail – and its interaction with light.
Using photographs taken at various times of day, in different light conditions, Suzy draws on her design background to compose and manipulate the images. Using these as reference she creates representational oil paintings but with a contemporary edge. Her work is not about history or preservation – her images are contemporary scenes recently observed – to highlight overlooked or unnoticed details of our present landscape.
Suzy studied under well-known landscape artist Clem Millward and his knowledge and guidance still inspires her. She has been painting full time since 2009 and has held several successful solo shows and regularly participates in group exhibitions on the east coast of Australia.
Much of her work is currently by commission and is held by corporate and private collectors in Australia, Canada, USA, the UK and Europe. Suzy lives and works in Sydney with her partner and an unsociable cat.
