John has until recent years lived with his family on the waterfront at Callala Beach at Jervis Bay on the south coast of New South Wales. They all enjoyed this pristine, peaceful beachside location with the sand, surf and boats, where he has sailed yachts, built yachts, watched shipping in the Bay and developed a lifetime interest in the maritime scene.
He commenced his working life training as a land surveyor and quickly developed skills in plan-drawing and producing field notes. John undertook art classes locally in a variety of styles, media and initially painted historic buildings. At this time he was commissioned to paint a series of old and heritage-protected buildings for a local landowner and also an extensive series for a law firm.
As a member of the Royal Australian Naval Reserve John developed a passion for painting ships, seascapes and maritime subjects. He prefers to work with a pen in order to render the detail in his work, and first determines the scene with a partial light ink outline, finishing with traditional transparent watercolour.
He has exhibited locally on the South Coast, in the Blue Mountains, Sydney and other centres.
