Jack Woods

I have been painting pictures of boats, and particularly the early classic yachts, for over 30 years, enjoying converting scenes, from descriptions in sailing books, into paintings. A particular theme that I enjoy, is to paint the classic small cruising yachts that ventured thousands of miles across the oceans, before the advent of all the modern technology, with owners who either sailed solo or with a minimal crew.

Before painting these yachts I read the books of their voyages, and study the yacht’s lines, and rigging details. By the end of the painting I hope to have a feeling that I am aboard the vessel and experiencing part of the voyage with the air whistling in the rigging, and the spray in the air.  My website includes detailed information on the voyages and the yacht specifications.

I can’t claim to have studied under any famous artists, but I have just learnt art from reading technical art books, and spending many enjoyable hours working on the sea and boat relationship. I mainly exhibit locally including at the national ANL Maritime Art exhibition which is held annually at the historic Mission to Seafarers building in Melbourne. I always hope that when a painting sells it is going to a person who similarly loves the sea and classic yachts.
