Derek Newton

Derek Newton

Derek works mainly in his studio in Wanneroo, Western Australia, but often travels to visit other artists and write about their artistic life behind the studio doors, while also working on his own art projects. These magazine articles are published by the Artist Pallet group.

He was brought up not far from the River Thames and always enjoyed watching the river life, and the endless movement of both pleasure and business boats navigating and docking. While too young to remember the old rigged Thames Barges, much information remains and many are still around if you know where to look. Artists like Turner and Seago regularly used them as inspiration, and is often reflected in Derek’s own work.

With this background he became interested in joining the Australian Society of Marine artists and is now an Exhibiting Member, providing the opportunity to engage with many fine marine artists and also hang his own work at ASMA exhibitions.

Derek is also kept busy through his membership of the WA Watercolour Society, visiting many places as the artist in residence. His work is mainly watercolour, pen and ink or pencil.
